Avid golfer
This course was poorly set up for check in. We checked in at the bar area and the bartender was taken back that we even had to do that. The pro shop was open but the pro was sitting at a bar top table doing computer work. The course was in poor condition from tee to green. Fairways and greens had mole traps set and mole holes were all over the course. No good Bermuda grass on any surface. I wish there was something positive to add in but there was not. The course was tight and tough with accuracy being the premium skill needed. If the conditions of the grass were extremely improved it may get more play.
John was anything by "professional"
After checking online for tee times and speaking with someone to verify the openings I headed to the course. John informed me that there was a shotgun start men's league teeing off at 9 on the front. I asked to go off the back. he said maintenance was on the back. I asked to go off 7 at 8:25 which would put me at #10 at 9 am. Which would keep me ahead of the double stacked shotgun and playing the back after the maintenance would be done. He informed me (after multiple attempts to interrupt me) that he was a "professional" and that I didn't understand him. He never offered an apology for the website not being updated, he never offered an afternoon tee time. He was condescending and when finally I was allowed to explain an options to allow me and my buddy to go off 7, he stated that he would not consider it. Will never visit again and will tell everyone.
Good day of golf at Marlboro
Great design to the course, with some good challenges. A few greens were under repair because of gopher damage, but the course was obviously trapping them, and dealing with the problem. Enjoyable round, but course was busy, and it took us 5 hours to make the round, because we waited at every hole to play.
Challenging course
Course was in fair shape.
Very challenging off the tees. Narrow fairways and multiple holes where water plays a factor. Overall fun and fairly inexpensive at the right times.
Friendly staff in the tavern.
Don't Do It
This is probably the worst course in the Tri-county area. Not only is it unbelievably difficult, it is also poorly maintained. Tee boxes are awful and fairways are dirt. We paid $25 and it was too much. Only bright side is the greens. They are hard and fast. There is no way you can enjoy this course. I'm beginning to think that mgmt doesn't care about this course whatsoever.
Great Track
Great layout, beautiful landscaping. Forces you to play the entire bag.
Thanks Victor for the five star rating! We always enjoy seeing familiar faces at the course. Come back and tee off with at Masonboro again soon.
Very Average
I had called a couple of days ahead to reserve a tee time, I was given a price of $29 per round. When we checked in, the price had been raised to $32 per round, Tee boxes were in terrible shape, yet greens were very good. The grass had been mowed too close, so most times were hitting off of dirt in the fairways. Had a twosome that was jumping around holes, sometimes they were in front of us, sometimes behind us, sometimes driving past while we were playing. No trashcans or water on the course. This course is on our First Tee card, so we will give it another try mid summer. Otherwise, we probably would not go back.
Thank you for the review!
Average
Look for $26 the course was not bad. The pace of play was awful though and I just left after 9 holes because it was unbearable. I was a single behind a twosome and foursome. The foursome let the twosome through and after three holes let me through. I asked the twosome on a tee box and they refused to let me through. I would say this is not the courses fault but they just don't care who goes to the first tee, and you can go whenever. Would be nice if they had a marshal.
Thank you Steve for the feedback and the review. We apologize if your expectations weren't met at your last visit at the course. We hope you can join us again at Masonboro in the future.
This course is challenging
I'm from Western PA. and have spent parts of the winter in Kure Beach last year and this. While in the area, I've played this course about 15 times, all tee times booked through GolfNow.com. I consider Masonboro to be a very good deal for the GolfNow prices.
The course is loaded with bunkers and water and some fairways that are a bit on the tight side. One can score here if he is hitting the ball straight and solid. If he fails to do either, a heavy price is often paid!
The greens in particular and the course in general are in good but not great shape but maybe this reflects the time of year that I have played it.
Coming from PA, the very tight lies on the dormant Bermuda grass have been a challenge for me.
Some of the bunkers could use more sand.
I do like the course. The staff has been quite friendly.
Thank you for the feedback and the four star review! We hope you can tee off with us again soon at Masonboro!
Thank you for the review!
One of the top courses in Wilmington
I have played Masonboro many times. It is my favorite Wilmington course. I am an average golfer, so the course is somewhat difficult for me. There are some areas of the course that require great accuracy, but that is part of what I enjoy. The course pushes me to focus. Having said that, I always enjoy my round there. The course is in great shape. The greens are always in excellent condition. My only request would be to overseed in the winter.
Thanks J, for the great review! We are pleased to hear you had a great time at Masonboro from your recent visit. We hope to see you again in the near future!
Love This Course & the Employees
I've been playing this course for 2-3 years now because the employees are friendly, the course is usually in good to great condition, and it's a fair value.
The course can play very difficult, longer than you think and you have to learn to putt on these greens. I've played at other courses in the area with people who live on Masonboro, but do not play there because they say it is too difficult.
You have to accept what the course gives you. Holes 3, 6, 7, and 8 are scoring opportunities on the front. Holes 1, 2, and 5 require good tee shots and precision approach shots to make par but par is attainable. Holes 4 and 9 are just difficult par 4's that require a long tee shot and long approach. And par can depend on the pin placement.
I feel the back nine is easier, and actually prefer to play that first although the 10th is a difficult starting hole. However, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18 are very playable for par with some birdie opportunities. # 17 is a long par 3, with all carry over water. Usually requires at least 165 to 170 just to carry the water from the white the white tees.
You pretty much have to hit the greens in specific areas to be able to score, but they are usually in very good condition and run true.
Some of the fairways might have some wet spots and rough areas, but that's mostly caused by players who do not observe the CPO signs sometimes and just don't care about maintaining course conditions.
And some of the tee boxes may get a little beat up again because of some players just don't care and will take numerous practice shots just throwing turf with each one.
But overall it's a great value as you're playing a public course, not an exclusive country club, but you will be treated well from the staff who will meet you in the parking lot with a cart, to the pro shop and restaurant staff, and even the maintenance staff that you will encounter during your round.
Masonboro Golf
Very nice layout. The front seemed a little tighter than the back. Tee boxes were not in very good condition. Greens were ok. Seems like it was a nice course at one time, but it needs some tlc.
I got an ok deal from GolfNow. Probably not worth playing at full price.
People were friendly and pace of play was good.
Thank you for your feedback and course experience regarding your recent visit with us. We hope you can tee off again at Masonboro with a new perspective in the future!
Good bargain on a hot deal
I would be disappointed if I paid more than $25 to play this course. Tee boxes are beat up sand traps, and the greens are tight carpets that have patches and disease running throughout. Luckily, today I paid less than $25 so it was well worth getting out there and swinging the sticks.
We apologize if your expectations weren't met on your recent visit at Masonboro Country Club. We are always improving the course and customer experience. Hope you can hit the greens with us in the near future!
Thank you Mark9670179 for the great review! We hope you can tee off with us at Masonboro again this season.
