No. 6 at Pinehurst opened in 1979, and quickly earned a reputation for being one of the most challenging layouts in the area. No. 6 from the back tees, the general consensus went, was the hardest course in Pinehurst. The story goes that a man once took a dozen balls onto the front nine and had to buy more at the turn.
This course can be relatively easy if you back off and concentrate on keeping your ball in play. But there are woods and thick vegetation, water, steep fall-offs, mounds and swales that gobble up any errant shots.
