Shocked
Like losing golf balls within a foot of the fairway in 6-inch rough with bushels of mown grass lying around? Go to Little River. Owners obviously spent big bucks building a beautiful club house and condos for golfers. Some of the money should be spent on redoing greens, mowing rough, fixing bunkers, etc. Played LR often but not for a few years. Shocked totally at how conditions have fallen off.
Ghost Ship
This is a great course that has seen better days unfortunately. I love the layout, but the greens were poor. It just needs a little TLC and it would be great. It seems like stepping back in time to a place with such great potential but it has been left to float aimlessly into the golf course abyss.
Poor customer service
This is the second time I have been to this course in 2 weeks. The staff holds it against the customer for booking on golf now. It's similar to using a groupon with the staff upset that you are playing at a reduced rate. With the number of golf courses around pinehurst with friendly staffs, I would pass on this one. Also the course conditions were subpar with several weeds and poor greens. The pro shop is pretty empty so make sure you bring what you need. Pace of play was good both times.
Greens
The back nine greens were not good. All of the greens were slow. The course had weeds all over the rough. Not impressed.
Friendly Staff
Staff made you feel welcome.
Course was fun and many pin placements
One of my favorites in Pinehurst
Been playing Little River since it opened. Greens in very good condition even with the string of 100 degree days. Fairways and Tees ok. My only comment would be on the bunkers it looked like they had not been touched in several days.
Food selection a little lacking. I understand this is a slow time of year but it was kind of like "It is what it is. " Bottom line I will be back.
Nice layout needs some TLC
This is a very nice layout. I played with my wife and the course was interesting and enjoyable for the both of us. A good variety of holes and challenges. Course maintenance was my issue. The fairway bermuda needed mowing by at least two or three days. The bent grass greens were extremely slow. I know bent needs to be left a little long in the summer but this was too much. If it wasn't for the maintenance issues I would have given it four stars.
It's always fun to play Little River.
I always enjoy a round at Little River. Even more today than usual because there is actually green grass. Many, many courses in North Carolina are experiencing difficult playing conditions because of the winterkill of the grasses. That is not the case at LR. The fairways are green, and the greens are in very good condition. A great mixture of challenging holes, and holes that provide a chance for a birdie. Water is in play on several holes, and dogleg holes that suggest you move your ball left or right. If you book a time at LR you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!
The River Runs Wild
I love this course. I play here several times a year. Everything is great here. The course is challenging. Like most courses I play its the scenery that makes courses so attractive. To be in this area the golf courses got to have something to keep people coming back. Southern Pines-Pinehurst is a great place to play golf PERIOD.
Excellent Course
Excellent Course with moderate difficulty, white tees a little long (6430 yards), but very playable. Fairways are wide and the fairway grass is uniform and playable, even in summer. Several neat water crossings, and several sand traps in exactly the wrong location that adds a fair challenge. Highly recommend the course.
Great layout pleasant staff but disappointed
This course has a great layout and a wonderful staff. The greens were good, but unfortunately the course has not had the budget to treat for weeds so that really was a problem. Weeds everywhere and the tee boxes were in bad shape. Aside from that I will play it again for the great layout and nice greens. Not to mention the great staff!
Needs a lot of work
No starter at first hole I had to figure out who was next on T ourselves All tee boxes were in bad shape Fairways needed a lot of work . Fringes around greens were in bad shape also . Bad bad sand and the bunkers rocks in the bunker look like construction sand to make concrete . Two of the holes had no signage to tell you what hole you were at . Could not tell whether the course was going to close or just not want to spend any money . Only thing that kept me from going home was the greens were okay Play this course years ago was much better
course needs help
once a premier course, the upkeep has fallen to a "do what must be done." Tee boxes have little to NO grass and the course was not over seeded nor the greens changed over to summer grass.
Very disappointed!
Little River is going downhill
Because of recent rains we were asked to keep on the paths or in the rough...on many occasions it was very difficult to tell the rough from the fairways. The tee boxes were in horrible shape and many of the cart paths were falling away to nothing.
I have played this course in the past and it was in great shape....not so yesterday. Would not recommend.
So so
The numerous times we have played here the conditions were always spot on, but not this time the T boxes not so good. Needs a lot of weed control done.
What a gem!
Still dealing with a little preseason weeds and such, but overall a fantastic layout! Cannot wait to play here again!
Sad state of affairs
I played here with a group about 15 years ago and the course was immaculate. Since then it has clearly fallen upon hard times. The greens are still superbly maintained but the rest of the course looks to have been ignored. I'm guessing that this facility is just too far from downtown Pinehurst for most groups to frequent. Signs are all in need of a coat of paint. Cart paths and roads are so strewn by potholes as to be unsalvageable. I feel sorry for anyone who purchased real estate on this course as their property values have to have plummeted One last complaint. only yardage markers are painted blocks in fairways which are grown over as are all sprinkler heads. Painted lines on cart paths are crumbled. Sprinkler heads are grown over by grass. Just by putting a 150 post in the fairway could easily lower the suggested 4 hour 20 minute playing time by a good 30 minutes. Great layout....truly a shame. Will probably not be back.
Good course great price
Still early in the season so fairways still dry but greens in excellent condition. At this price a bargain.
Needs TLC and Seervice
I played on Easter, so I guess I should have guessed there would be limited service (no cart service, no restaurant, no support staff), just one person running the Pro Shop... not terribly friendly either. Course needs a lot of work, but the greens were good for the most part (fast). Certainly with the Golf Now discount it was a price performer, but as often, you get what you pay for.
Disappointed
My wife and I came to Pinehurst for a week, I played the course several years ago, and loved it then. My wife had never played it. We were disappointed from the onset by the lack of interest by the staff at bag drop ( we loaded, and unloaded by ourselves), as well as the pro shop person who was disinterested in our being there. There was no direction from any starter, since there didn't seem to be one in sight. We teed off when we thought we should go, and there was no one around that cared. Now the course- lousy condition, shaggy tees, no grass, and poorly marked for distances. The only saving grace were the greens, which were quite good compared to the rest of the course. We decided to have a beer after our game, and the bartender was polite and attentive. That was the only saving grace of an otherwise disappointing day. We won't be playing there again unless major changes are made.
