Bald Head Island Golf Club is a 30-minute ferry ride from the mainland, and the ferry itself is an hour from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. You have to pay for both the ferry ride and parking. In other words, you have to really want to play there.

They changed the name of The Gauntlet to The Founders, but the name change didn't make the course any easier. It's deserved: average golfers will find more than their match here. Architect P.B. Dye designed the green complexes here with something ethereal in mind.

At the St. James Plantation, it's The Members Club. The marketers like to say Hale Irwin designed the original 18 holes with "fun" in mind.

The Players course at St. James Plantation was designed by Carolinian Tim Cates, who is known for assembling layouts with left-handers and back-teers in mind; hence, the name, the Players. In fact, The Players' slope rating of 150 is just one digit lower than The Founders, the St. James course that routinely mesmerizes and frustrates with its complicated and unnerving green complexes.
